Girls Leadership Institute

Three years ago, at the city’s invitation, WWT initiated an on-going Leadership Institute, an intensive series of workshops for young teenage girls who are nominated as potential leaders by their teachers and principals as they are entering junior high school or Básico. The Leadership Institute programs, attended throughout the girls’ time in Básico, promote the girls’ commitment to their own education, strengthen their understanding of gender relations, and bolster goal setting, decision-making, team building and self-esteem.
Institute programs also motivate and prepare these lideresas to start local Girls Clubs, encouraging them to become leaders in their communities now, and effectively raising the visibility and benefits to all of educating girls and women. The Girls Clubs, in turn, provide a safe environment for all teen girls to consider the challenges of staying in school, engage in their local community, develop leadership skills, identify personal and group goals, and make individual and group decisions.
